Duke of Edinburgh’s Award East Lothian & Edinburgh

With the DofE season soon upon us there is an impending pressure to deliver the Award to the vast numbers of youngsters who see the value of what it offers. Many schools and community groups are bursting at the seams and are unable to cope with demand. I would like to highlight to group leaders/supervisors that Venturing Out holds an Approved Activities Provider Licence and can help deliver part or full expedition module programmes.

Venturing  Out’s services are offered on a not for profit basis and our licence extends to walking, canoeing, cycling and sea kayaking expeditions.

We work closely  with Groups, Schools and Individuals undertaking their DofE Programme, working  hard to assist young people in achieving their objectives and developing new  skills. Throughout their training and expedition modules participants are encouraged  to accept real ownership of their DofE programme and continue this until completion  of the Award.

Venturing Out understands that demand is outweighing the ability to deliver and is here to help. If you require further information please see our website or get in touch.

DofE Bronze Walking Expedition Opportunity – East Lothian

Venturing Out, is offering a DofE open bronze walking expedition from the 17th to 19th October 2011. Given the dates this is close to the end of the Expedition season and is therefore probably the last opportunity youngsters will get to complete the expedition element of their award this year.

The course is aimed at those aged 14 to 16 years who have completed the training and practice expedition aspects of the award. Proof of this will be required.

Monday is an opportunity for individuals to meet and take part in a range of preparatory activities including team building, route planning, kit check and briefing. There is no accommodation provided for this evening, it is expected that parents/guardians will drop and collect participants.

Tuesday is the first of a 2-day, 1-night Walking Expedition. Participants will follow their route as planned, with Venturing Out staff supervising remotely. They will be met at pre-determined points to monitor their progress and safety. Our assessors will also visit the group during the day, usually at camp where they will also observe their campcraft and cooking to ensure safe practice is followed.

Wednesday is a continuation of the expedition, supervision will continue on a remote basis. At the end of the expedition, the group will undergo debriefing before departure.
